The Moth Community Engagement Program
The Moth Community Program provides the space, tools, and expertise for people to practice the art and craft of personal storytelling. We partner with nonprofits - community-based organizations, cultural institutions, foundations, and government agencies - to host workshops that inspire confidence and self-reflection and deepen connections within and between communities. WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
The Community Engagement Program seeks engaging, empathetic, articulate leaders passionate about storytelling and working in classrooms and communities. Instructors will work on a small team to plan and execute workshops. Instructors are hired on a per-workshop basis depending on their schedules and availability.
Commitment:
- This is a freelance contractor position with an expected workload of 3-4 workshops per year (both virtual and in-person. See info below on the range of time commitment for those workshops).
- In the Community program, we primarily facilitate workshops for adult participants (ranging from young adults to senior citizens) affiliated with a partnering non-profit organization join us for 1-3-hour Intro/Drop-in workshops, 6-9-hour Alumni workshops, or 9-15-hour Intensives. Teaching Artists should be able to commit to at least 4-6 workshops per year (anywhere from 15 to 60 contact hours).
- Instructors are also invited to participate in regular paid PD and training opportunities throughout the year.
Our Onboarding Process:
- Newly hired instructors will attend a series of required paid training sessions in the winter concurrent with observations of Community spaces before being placed as a co-instructor (paired with a more experienced lead instructor) in a Moth workshop.
- The paid observation period will include 1 Intensive (15 hrs) and 1 Intro or Alumni Workshop (3-6 hrs).
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Title: Instructor
Responsibilities Include:
- Before the workshop:
- Meet with the instructor team to map out the overall teaching path.
- Throughout the workshop:
- Communicate with the team about the lesson plan for that week.
- During each workshop:
- Teach the art and craft of storytelling through sample stories, team-building activities, story structure lessons, brainstorming, and craft comments.
- Work with participants to help them craft their stories.
- Keep a record of participant attendance, story progress, and reflections.
- Assist in the production of a final, invite-only performance.
Qualifications:
- Experience with curriculum-based teaching and/or small group facilitation.
- Strong ability to empathize.
- Some experience in conflict resolution.
- Basic understanding of story structure.
- Comfortable with a degree of self-disclosure.
- Passionate about elevating voices through the art and craft of storytelling.
Also appreciated:
- Knowledge of Moth storytelling
- Second Language Skills
- Prior experience as a storyteller or in another performance art form
- Prior experience as a teacher, teaching artist, or comparable community work
