Honoring My Brothers
by Edie Meeks
A triage nurse does her best to save the lives of soldiers.
Edie Meeks was born in Minneapolis and graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota—beginning a nursing career that spans over 50 years. She joined the Army Nurse Corps (ANC) in early 1968 and was sent to Vietnam just a few months later. There, Edie worked in the Intensive Care Units of the 3rd Field Hospital in Saigon and the 71st Evac Hospital in Pleiku as one of 10,0000 women who served in the Vietnam War. In 1970, she left the ANC and began her work in the operating room, which she continues to this day in the Northern Westchester Hospital of Mt. Kisco, New York. Edie has served on the Board of Directors of the Vietnam Women’s Memorial Foundation, and currently sits on the Board of Directors of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor and on Congressman Sean Mallony’s Veterans’ advisory board.
