Chief of Staff:

Since 1997, The Moth—an acclaimed nonprofit and cultural institution—has celebrated the art and craft of storytelling. Through true stories, told live on stage without notes, The Moth has presented nearly 40,000 true personal stories to standing-room-only audiences around the globe that celebrate the diversity and the commonality of the human experience.

The Chief of Staff works closely with the Executive Director--helping to support staff and board growth and wellness and overseeing strategic initiatives towards The Moth’s mission. This role serves as the liaison between The Moth’s Executive Director, its Board of Directors, and the entire Moth team. The Chief of Staff has a bird’s eye view of the organization across teams and departments and is central to advising, planning and influencing outcomes for the organization. The Chief of Staff is both a leader within the organization as well as the key administrator who also handles detailed work such as scheduling, preparing agendas, and handling individual personnel issues.

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in a business management role, human resources and executive-level advising. The ideal candidate believes in the conviction that storytelling is an important artform and believes in the Moth’s mission. 


Direct Support of the Executive Director: 

  • Work with the Executive Director and senior leadership to set strategic priorities for the organization and further employee wellness and company culture.

  • Act as a key thought partner to the Executive Director, brainstorming and identifying solutions to organizational challenges.

  • Plan senior leadership and high-level operations meetings and all-staff retreats, developing objectives and agendas, coordinating with executive assistant on logistics.

  • Oversee preparation and planning for The Moth’s Board of Directors, support the Executive Director in managing interactions with the board co-chairs and four committee leaders. 

  • Provide communications support in drafting reports, presentations, pitches, board newsletters, and staff communications on behalf of the Executive Director.

  • Assist the Executive Director in onboarding new board members, monitoring term lengths and attendance and maintaining the Board of Directors handbook.

Strategic Planning and Alignment:

  • Help lead the strategic management process for the organization by acting as a project manager and ensuring alignment with the Executive Director and senior leadership.

  • Assist in oversight of large, often cross-functional, organization-wide projects or initiatives, bringing together important stakeholders and helping to drive decision-making. 

  • Help determine key performance indicators and update leadership regularly. 

Human Resources, Legal  and Management: 

  • Build relationships with staff to identify and propose new systems and processes to streamline operations. 

  • Provide support to management and/or employees using maturity of judgment and keeping confidentiality around sensitive HR issues.

  • Manage Human Resources functions including People Development, collaborating with hiring managers to execute recruiting and hiring needs.

  • Define and guide the recruitment process as well as onboarding and offboarding of new and departing employees. 

  • Timely communication around employee benefit eligibility, enrollment, and changes, as well as HR policy and procedure updates.

  • Work closely with the Finance Team regarding employee related policy development to ensure the organization remains compliant with Federal, State and City labor laws. 

  • Serve as the point of contact for all legal issues with The Moth’s outside counsel on contracts, licensing, HR issues and brand protection. 

  • Assist on improvements to organizational structure, looking for areas of vulnerability or skills gaps and help to address them.

  • Oversee the management of one direct report, the Executive Assistant and Office Manager, who supports The Moth’s Artistic Director, Executive Producer and Executive Director.

  • Identify training and skill-building workshops/courses for individual staff and Moth teams.


  • Required:

    • 8+ years of experience in executive management with experience in HR

    • Experience planning and helping to lead strategic initiatives

    • Proven track record of working across multiple teams

    • Ability to create systems and processes; loves to create order out of chaos

    • Thrives in helping others and is trusted with confidential information 

    • Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills

    • Ability to work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment

    • Strategic thinker, creative problem solver, and versatile

    • Excels at building relationships and networks

  • Bonus:

    • Bachelor's or Master’s Degree or relevant experience

    • Proven success in a project coordination role

    • Experience with the intersection of creativity and business

    • Experience working with a board of directors or an understanding of non-profit management
