MothSHOP Community Education Program

The MothSHOP Community Education Program offers storytelling workshops to high school students and adults in underserved communities throughout New York City.

Utilizing the same techniques used in both the Mainstage series and corporate workshops, our team helps the participants develop and deliver their own stories, culminating in a final show where each graduate delivers a five minute story in front of their friends, family and community members.

Beyond just telling their story, both teen and adult MothSHOP graduates often experience a process of personal transformation, discovering that developing, sharing and hearing personal stories:

  • promotes self-awareness and self-confidence
  • improves the ability to focus, distinguish and prioritize
  • develops empathy and tolerance
  • brings perspective and a sense of control over past events
  • develops a sensitivity to language that translates into improved writing skills and enhanced literacy

Archival Project

The Moth has presented more than 700 shows and 6,000 stories since the first evening in George Green’s living room. These stories represent a unique history of our time, with more than 38 complete days, comprising of over 912 recorded hours of audio and video featuring Dominick Dunne, Spalding Gray and Frank McCourt, plus thousands of people from our open-mic StorySLAM series. Much of our archive was captured using technology with a shelf life of only ten to fifteen years. We are currently digitizing much of this back-catalogue so that we can both safely store and share favorite stories. This will come to around 11 terabytes of data, and will grow by around 4 terabytes per year as we continue to expand the number of shows we produce.

With the digital landscape in the midst of a technological revolution, we are currently analyzing the best options for storing and sharing The Moth archive.

If you have ideas, suggestions or can offer support to help us secure this critical component of The Moth’s future, please contact:
