Position:  Senior Manager of The Moth Education Program

Location: New York City

The Moth:  Founded in 1997, The Moth is a nonprofit dedicated to honoring the commonality and diversity of human experience through the art and craft of true, personal storytelling. Our purpose is to create a more empathetic world by connecting people from every background through the power and humanity of shared, true stories, and our aim is to make personal storytelling a universally recognized and socially transformative art form.

Position Overview: The Moth seeks a highly motivated professional to lead our Education Program through its next level of engagement. This role will be responsible for the success of The Moth’s Education Program, setting strategy and vision along with the seamless management, development, program delivery, and quality control of every aspect of the program. 

Reports to: Managing Director of Programs

Overview of Responsibilities: 

The Sr. Manager directly oversees The Moth’s Education Team, including full-time, part-time and freelance staff.  Primary responsibilities involve six key areas:

  1. Set the vision for The Moth’s Education Program and manage its team. You have the experience and skills to develop and implement a program vision and strategy, which aligns with the Moth’s mission. You will oversee, bring together, and galvanize your team.

  2. Establish the Education Program as a thought leader in the storytelling space. You are driven to lead the conversation on the power of storytelling to transform classrooms as a space to amplify youth voices.  

  3. Develop storytelling platforms for youth. You are relentless in the pursuit of giving young people the tools and space to develop their voice and tell their stories.

  4. Expand professional development and curriculum resources for educators. You have deep empathy and appreciation for classroom teachers, and you endeavor to equip them with innovative tools to inspire their students.

  5. Foster a community of storytellers by deepening and expanding the program’s reach. You endeavor to be a champion of empathy, building authentic, lasting relationships.  Internally, this means working across departments to share and leverage Moth resources.  Externally, this means working with partnering organizations and external stakeholders to continuously grow the Education Program and the larger Moth audience.

  6. Oversee the development  and retention of instructor talent. You are keenly aware of the link between high quality instruction and high quality programming, and you collaborate across The Moth’s workshop programs to review, evaluate and hire talented instructors who reflect the diversity of the participants we serve.

Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of professional work experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of direct supervision of 2+ persons

  • Demonstrated passion for working with high school and college-aged youth

  • Experience at creating and implementing strategic vision while managing day to day team operations

  • Strong project management skills, including setting and evaluating program goals, KPIS, and budgets

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Deeply collaborative, valuing colleagues and clients alike

  • Experience contributing to grant writing, fulfillment and reporting

  • Relishes working on teams: up, down and sideways

  • Ability to take initiative, keep a positive attitude and maintain a professional demeanor

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Non-profit management experience

  • Experience working as a teacher, school administrator and/or in youth development 

  • Demonstrated success in building relationships with funders and external stakeholders

Salary and compensation: The Moth offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including generous paid time off and health, vision, and dental insurance. In response to the pandemic, we are working remotely until at least September 13, 2021.
