DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Moth’s Department of Development cultivates a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization that allows The Moth to sustain itself financially while remaining mission-driven. The team includes The Moth’s Executive Director (ED), Director of Development (DoD), Director of Donor Experiences, Assistant Director of Individual Giving, Manager of Membership Programs and Annual Giving, plus a nine-member Development Committee comprised of Board Members and major donors. The Department raises approximately 30% of The Moth’s annual operating budget annually. In 2022, the team will raise almost $3M through foundation support and government grants, major gifts, Memberships & individual donations, and special events such as The Moth’s annual spring gala, The Moth Ball.


POSITION OVERVIEW: 
Reporting to the Director of Development, the Manager of Membership Programs and Annual Giving is an integral part of the Development Team who develops, implements, manages and evaluates strategies to grow contributions from individual donors, with a focus on The Moth’s core Membership programs: the Hall of Flame, General Membership, Director’s Circle, and Porchlight Society. The Manager also strategizes and launches new campaigns to mobilize The Moth’s audiences and listeners including its podcast subscribers, StorySLAM attendees, and Mainstage audiences, both in the US and abroad. The Manager uses data and analytics to achieve best-in-class Membership moves management (recruitment, cultivation, engagement, and retention) and ensures that member benefits are delivered in an effective and timely manner. The Manager plans and executes creative campaigns using a wide variety of strategies, including broad and targeted outreach through social media, text messaging, e-blasts, and print to inform and grow The Moth’s giving circles. The Manager also provides support for major donor prospect identification, Regional and Affinity Groups, and special events including the annual spring gala, The Moth Members’ Show, and more. A successful candidate will be a strategic thinker and self-starter with a natural curiosity to continually improve results and experiment with new tools, methods, and ideas. Someone with a track record of delivering a high-quality online donor experience is strongly preferred.

REQUIREMENTS
Strategy & execution:

  • Develop and implement creative strategies to retain existing individual donors and Members, and recruit and cultivate new ones
  • Plan and execute fundraising campaigns, including Fall Membership Drive, End of Year Campaign, Spring Appeal and August Renewal Campaign
  • Coordinate with The Moth’s Marketing, Podcast and Production teams to craft, schedule and manage email, text, online and social media communications
  • Grow the Membership program’s overall financial goal by 60% over the next 18-24 months
  • Manage Membership budget
  • Hold live/virtual face-to-face solicitation meetings and calls with Members to qualify prospects for major giving
  • Collaborate with the Director of Development to develop and implement systems to identify, qualify and move Members up through a donor pipeline to major gifts
  • Organize and execute special events for Members including Member Storytelling Workshops, Open Houses, the annual Moth Members’ Show, virtual Fireside chats, and other events as needed

Administrative:

  • Manage correspondence with individual donors including acquisition, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, renewal, and acknowledgment materials
  • Draf, edit and send solicitations, Membership renewals, annual appeals, reports, and digital content
  • Oversee the fulfillment of Membership benefits, including ticket requests and merchandise
  • Manage the donor database (Salesforce/PatronManager) and administrative processes to ensure that The Moth’s Membership program runs smoothly

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Minimum 3-5 years on a successful Membership and/or individual giving team, including experience planning, implementing and evaluating campaigns
  • Strong familiarity with fundraising principles and trends in fundraising and philanthropy
  • Proven track record of using proactive strategies to acquire and retain donors and  Members
  • Solicit donations by social media, email, phone, direct mail, and in-person
  • High level of proficiency with prospect management data systems, prior experience with Salesforce, PatronManager, Blackthorn, Experience Cloud and Marketing Cloud is a plus
  • Familiarity with email and mobile giving systems, preferably MailChimp, MobileCause and Classy
  • Experience with Facebook and Instagram’s fundraising tools
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic and changing work environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to juggle various projects and deadlines
  • Proven ability to work independently, take initiative, anticipate challenges, solve problems, and work under pressure
  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for The Moth’s mission
  • Availability for occasional work on evenings and weekends
