Volunteering

We’re lucky to have a fantastic community of volunteers and supporters to help produce our shows and community programs in New York and beyond. An hour of your time means the world to us – please email us if you would like to join our volunteer mailing list, and be sure to include where you are based and what area of our work interests you.


Interning

The Moth has three seasons for which we hire interns: Spring (January-May), Summer (May-August) and Fall (September-December). We begin accepting applications two months in advance of the season of interest. Each season we seek two production interns: one to support the national StorySLAM program, the other to support the New York and touring Mainstage Programs. We are looking for applicants with a strong work ethic, a desire to learn new skills in production, and a passion for stories and community building through storytelling.

The positions will be in The Moth’s New York City office with a stipend of $250 per week. Details on the StorySLAM and Mainstage internships below:

StorySLAM Internship
Responsibilities include:

  • Entering and organizing all post-production SLAM materials for our CRM database and filing system
  • Researching potential venues in new StorySLAM Markets and helping facilitate show launches in new cities
  • Building drafts of promotional show emails in Patron Manager and researching further promotional outlets for our GrandSLAM series.
  • Assisting in the live event production of our StorySLAMs and GrandSLAMs. It is also encouraged to attend and support our Mainstage events
  • Supporting the office with a variety of administrative tasks
  • Other duties as appropriate

For the right applicant, there will be additional opportunities to sit in on Mainstage rehearsals, to participate in venue site visits, and to coach in our Community Education program.

Mainstage Internship
Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the production of our live Mainstage events, held monthly in NYC. It is also encouraged to attend and assist our weekly StorySLAM events
  • Entering and organizing all post-production Mainstage materials for our CRM database and filing system
  • Proofing and assisting with promotional materials, calendars and show programs
  • Transcribing stories and interviews for use on The Moth Radio Hour and podcast
  • Supporting the office with a variety of administrative tasks and research projects, as appropriate

For the right applicant, there will be opportunities to sit in on Mainstage rehearsals and one-on-one storyteller directing sessions, to participate in site visits to potential venues, and to coach in our Community Education program.

Qualifications:
We are looking for a commitment of 4 months, 4 days per week, including attendance of our live New York City events.

  • Bachelor’s Degree, completed or in progress, required
  • Experience working in the nonprofit sector and/or the arts preferred
  • Proficiency in Word and Excel; ability to learn CRM Databasing system
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Creative, self-sufficient, and proactive thinker; detail-oriented and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment
