Volunteering

We’re lucky to have a fantastic community of volunteers and supporters to help produce our shows and community programs in New York and beyond. An hour of your time means the world to us – please email us if you would like to join our volunteer mailing list, and be sure to include where you are based and what area of our work interests you.


Interning

The Moth has three seasons for which we hire interns: Spring (January-May), Summer (May-August) and Fall (September-December). Each season we seek one development intern and three production interns: one to support the national StorySLAM program, the other two to support the New York and touring Mainstage Programs. We are looking for applicants with a strong work ethic, a desire to learn new skills in production, and a passion for stories and community building through storytelling.

The positions will be in The Moth’s New York City office with a stipend of $250 per week. Details below:

DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP
Responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for ensuring data in CRM database is accurate, up-to-date and clean, and supervises other interns in this endeavor
  • Researches information about potential foundation/government funders and individual donors/prospects using internet tools
  • Assists in writing foundation/government proposals and reports
  • Assists in all aspects of membership
  • Writes letters of thanks to donors
  • Assists in preparation of all aspects of a fundraising gala
  • Support the office with a variety of administrative tasks
  • Other duties as appropriate

Qualifications:

  • Tech savvy; loves to learn new systems
  • Interest in cultivating the skills necessary for fundraising in a non-profit organization
  • Superior writing and internet research abilities
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A love of The Moth’s work and mission
  • Bachelors degree with some experience working or volunteering with not-for-profit organizations in a fundraising capacity

The positions will be in The Moth’s New York City office with a stipend of $250 per week. The position is 4 days per week and will begin in January. PRODUCTION INTERNSHIPS

StorySLAM Internship
Responsibilities include:

  • Entering and organizing all post-production SLAM materials for our CRM database and filing system
  • Researching potential venues in new StorySLAM Markets and helping facilitate show launches in new cities
  • Building drafts of promotional show emails in Patron Manager and researching further promotional outlets for our GrandSLAM series.
  • Assisting in the live event production of our StorySLAMs and GrandSLAMs. It is also encouraged to attend and support our Mainstage events
  • Supporting the office with a variety of administrative tasks
  • Other duties as appropriate

For the right applicant, there will be additional opportunities to sit in on Mainstage rehearsals, to participate in venue site visits, and to coach in our Community Education program.
Mainstage Internship
Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the production of our live Mainstage events, held monthly in NYC and regularly around the country. It is also encouraged to attend and assist our weekly StorySLAM events
  • Entering and organizing all post-production Mainstage materials for our CRM database and filing system
  • Proofing and assisting with promotional materials, calendars and show programs
  • Transcribing stories and interviews for use on The Moth Radio Hour and podcast
  • Supporting the office with a variety of administrative tasks and research projects, as appropriate

For the right applicant, there will be opportunities to sit in on Mainstage rehearsals and one-on-one storyteller directing sessions, to participate in site visits to potential venues, and to coach in our Community Education program.

Qualifications:
For all production internships, we are looking for a commitment of 4 months, 4 days per week, including attendance of our live New York City events.

  • Bachelor’s Degree, completed or in progress, required
  • Experience working in the nonprofit sector and/or the arts preferred
  • Proficiency in Word and Excel; ability to learn CRM Databasing system
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Creative, self-sufficient, and proactive thinker; detail-oriented and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment
